On Saturday we decided to go out and explore a little of the city on foot. From looking at a map, it seemed like there is a nice park and a fancy church just across the street from our hotel. Built during the era of the tzars, this Russian Orthodox church is called Zenkov Cathedral. We read that it is made entirely of wood and not a single nail was used in its construction! It’s quite beautiful.

We strolled through the park and came across the very impressive Glory Monument. Weekend weddings are traditional here in Kazakhstan and apparently this church and park area is the place to come for pictures with the wedding party. I’m not kidding there were easily 25 beautiful brides of all shapes, sizes, and colors strolling the walkways. People were spraying champagne and releasing white doves; it was quite fun to take all the sights and sounds in as we passed through. The Glory Monument shows 16 soldiers displayed in a powerful array that forms the shape of the USSR. The monument commemorates men who gave their lives defending Moscow suburbs when the Germans invaded in 1941-1945. In front of it is an eternal flame and two other side monuments: one that shows grief and the other victory in battle.
